Mode of Learning:

Disha Fashion Institute has traditionally provided classroom training. However, during the COVID lockdown, the institute—one of the leading Silai schools—introduced online stitching classes. These online classes proved to be highly successful. Even after COVID restrictions were lifted, online tailoring classes have remained more popular than classroom training.

Success Stories of Disha Fashion Institute

(Formerly known as Usha Silai School; now no longer affiliated with Usha)

Reported by NDTV

Disha Silai School has been working towards a sustainable future in partnership with non-governmental organizations such as Looms of Ladakh Cooperative, UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund), and The Corbett Foundation.

Looms of Ladakh Women Cooperative is a farm-to-fashion collective that trains unemployed women artisans in Ladakh to create knitted and woven woollen products using the region’s rich wool heritage—pashmina, yak, sheep, and camel. They collaborated with Usha Silai School to help women learn stitching and produce finished products from raw materials.

In another partnership between Usha and UNFPA, the program aims to prepare 100 master trainers who will train 3,000 women across India in life skills over three years, with the goal of initiating meaningful social change. The Classical Silai School training module will now include 9 days of life skills training.

The Corbett Foundation and Disha Fashion Institute are working together to provide women from forest areas in Thane with alternative livelihood opportunities, reducing their dependence on forests.
